I picked up this book on a whim having never heard of the Writer but was hooked almost straight away. Martin Davies is a sensitive and insightful writer, and to me this stands out from other post WW1 novels. The characters are three dimensional, and the surprises, such as they are, come out of the characters, rather than being contrived. The ending is suitably open ended, but I can only hope......
