Darlington Library houses the Lending Library, Reference Library, e-Library Computer Suite, Darlington Centre for Local Studies and the Crown Street Art Gallery, a gallery space championing exciting new artwork by local and regional artists.

You will find Darlington's Central Library on Crown Street in the centre of the market town. There are two entrances at the front of the building and an accessible lift at the Priestgate end of the building, which takes you straight into the main lending library.

Within the Grade 2 listed building you will find:

The Lending Library, which has a stock of hardback and paperback fiction books, from bestsellers through to the classics; non-fiction titles to read for pleasure, for information or to help with your studies. If you have problems reading print, or if you like to listen whilst driving or doing the ironing, there is a large collection of books on CD available for loan. If you want to brush up on your language skills, we have a variety of language courses available for hire, in a range of European and Asian languages.

The Word, a separate area for younger readers, from babies right through to teenagers, where you will find storybooks, books to help with your homework, and books that are just for fun! There are also books on CD for all ages, and a collection of DVDs for our younger users. Saturday story and craft sessions take place in here, as do our weekly Baby rhymetime sessions.

Our public computers can be found in the e-library at the East Street end of the building. There are 32 computers available to library members free of charge for 30 minutes, there is a charge for longer periods. On these PCs you can read your emails, write your CV, book your holiday or just surf the net. We also run computer courses here. Also in this room you will find our collection of music CDs which are available to borrow for a week for a hire charge of £1.

The Reference Library houses a collection of dictionaries, encyclopaedias and general up-to-date information books which are not available for loan. Daily newspapers in English and other languages are available here, together with a collection of popular weekly and monthly magazines. On the computers in this room you can use our range of online resources, some of which you can also access free of charge from your computer at home.  Photocopying facilities are also available here for a small charge.

The Centre for Local Studies is also housed in the Darlington Library building.
