Jonny Lancaster | Solo Exhibition

Inspired by the vintage travel posters of the early to mid twentieth century, local artist Jonny Lancaster designs fresh contemporary prints based on locations in the North East. Jonny endeavours to capture the beauty of the places on our own doorstep and also to have fun with local landmarks and sayings. Two of his most successful prints are his ‘Monte Darlo’ and ‘Meet me under the town clock’ designs. If you’ve lived in Darlington, you’ve probably arranged to meet someone under our famous timekeeper! And chances are you’ve referred to the town as Monte Darlo!

This exhibition will showcase these prints as well as preparatory paintings and drawings.

Quaker Women

Quaker Women in 19th Century Darlington

March 2020 is Women’s History Month and to mark the occasion we’ve decided to show our popular Quaker Women in 19th Century Darlington display again. Some of the most influential people in Darlington’s history have been Quakers. Many of them were wealthy industrialists, bankers, politicians or philanthropists. You may be familiar with the names of Edward and Joseph Pease or Jonathan Backhouse perhaps but much less well-known are the women from these families.

Discover our Digitized Collection

The Centre for Local Studies has a large collection of images relating to Darlington and the surrounding areas (over 46,000 in fact!). In recent years we have been working hard with our dedicated volunteers to digitise many of the slides and negatives in the collection and make them available online for people to view. Our February display features some of the thousands of pictures we have shared on Flickr; from Darlington’s Theatre Royal posters from the 1880s to photographs of the town throughout the 20th Century. Call in and find out more about the digital photo collection and how you can view it
