Reviews
Such an original and clever novel. The narrator is a recently deceased man who has seven days in the in-between world to find out what caused his death before he moves on to who knows where. Was he murdered and if so by whom, and what happens when his seven days are up? There are plenty of suspects as his job as a freelance photographer, and his life as a gay man, in politically torn, violent and intolerant Sri Lanka saw him mixing with a host of dangerous individuals. I learnt a lot about Sri Lanka's violent history reading this novel. It worked for me both as a piece of social realism and as a metaphysical exploration of the meaning of life and death. And it's also a love story. It wouldn't have been my pick for the 2022 Booker Prize, but I can see why it won. Well worth reading.
